90: Key Takeaways: Social Media as an Artist

Daniel Kellogg:

What are the most essential takeaways for an artist and how they engage in social media?

Andrew Ousley:

I think first and foremost, an artist has to understand that they have to be on social media and they have to use it in a professional way. But they also-- you want to use it in a way that serves your career, but also is sustainable from both a personal and a mental health standpoint.

So what can you actually do realistically for the rest of your career? And then in terms of the content, you want to determine what your story is and what your voice is, what you're going to say about yourself and how you're going to say it, so that it is authentic and it sounds like you, and it reflects the best, most compelling aspects of your music making, as well as your personality and your personal history. In terms of the content and execution you want to think about, what content does your community respond to and what, what content resonates with you as well?

And so think about that. Try a bunch of different things. And as I said, look at other accounts and just spend time just trolling through other accounts and seeing what resonates with you and what works for their community as well. And then evaluate and optimize and look at the periodically every month or two, go back through your feeds and see what are the average numbers of likes, of shares, of comments? What are the posts that have way more? What are the posts that have way less? And why do you think they're performing less? And how can-- or better? And how can you then try for the next month to use content that will perform a little bit better? And then you analyze that a month later and so on. So building that, that feedback loop into how you approach your career.
