28: The best ways to promote your own activities

Daniel Kellogg:

What are some of the best ways to promote your own activities?

Beth Stewart:

Hmmm. So I think my best advice is to use your resources. So for example, if you're performing at an opera company or you're being presented on a concert series, reach out to the in house team and let them know that you're happy to help them with press, with donors, that you are the person they can call for that 5am television performance, you know, when you're barely awake, because those in house teams will always be looking for that and if you put yourself forward as an option, it's very likely that they'll take you up on it. And that's a way to get some coverage without having to do too much legwork yourself.

The other thing I would recommend, particularly if it's something you're self-producing is to make sure that you're creating assets for your collaborators to use. So that might mean a graphic that you create on Canva, or some suggested social media copy, some well-researched hashtags. If you can provide those things to your partners and your collaborators, it's much more likely that the project will be discussed, and that will be discussed in a way that reflects how you want it to be framed.

Kellogg:

Every artist should be reaching out to each presenter in advance of every single concert to do what you just talked about, or they should have somebody do it on their behalf. I think it's a fantastic thing to do.

Stewart:

Totally, and it makes a huge difference.
